The New Maharajah is very conveniently placed in Edinburgh's Forrest Road. That's pretty much slap-bang in the centre of the city but perhaps just a few minutes off from the famous Princess Street.

The strength of the New Maharajah is its ability to cope with groups. It's a large Indian restaurant and both the floor space and table capacity to cope with lots of friends or entire offices having a meal at once.

The first word of caution should be noted here. I've been to the New Maharajah a number of times (with large groups of friends) and you do have to watch the order. By accident or by design the staff are very prone to delivering more food than actually ordered and charging you for it. When challenged they are likely to drop the price without actually admitting to any wrongdoing.

The staff at the New Maharajah are helpful enough for me to believe that this quirk is more likely to be an accident rather than a malicious stab at the bill.

If you turn up in a smaller group you'll find that you're given the same level of attention; which is good, and there's much less risk of order confusion. I've also found there's no drama at all if you wish to share rice and/or a naan bread with someone else.

The range of food at the New Maharajah is good. I'm especially fond of the recommended section which lists (typically more expensive) options as favourites of the local community.

The range of food is good and I would rate the quality of food as average. You will regret it if you make the wrong choice, you'll be satisfied if you make the right one but you'll not be blown away.

The food in the New Maharajah is hot. Even a medium curry is hot and I've had mild-mediums which have been hotter than I would have liked. I can cope with hot spice. The quantity of food served is good, absolutely no qualms there and portions are almost always served on individual dishes and this makes sharing easy.

The range of drinks is also fairly good at the New Maharajah. In addition to beer and wine you'll have more traditional Indian drinks (like the yogurt based ones). It's a lot cheaper to have the dull and run of the mill pint on the tap than it is to order a large bottle of Cobra (which is Indian) as the bottles are nearly £5. Ouch. It's the drinks which can push the price of a New Maharajah meal up - but isn't that always the case?

The New Maharajah is not spectacular but it is good enough. It's convenient too and that helps a lot.
